I am a librarian in a small, Oklahoma town, and I enjoy keeping a 'fact board' in the young adult section on which I write something quite interesting each day. This has become very popular, and is a project both I and our patrons enjoy. As a fan of the show (which I watch via the internet) and of this forum, I thought I would attempt to depend upon the kindness of strangers and ask for contributions for my fact board. I have been accused of simply 'making these things up' (philistines) so please feel free to give me your wildest tidbits. Thank you in advance, and if anyone cares, I'll post updates as to what has received the greatest response here in li'l old Lakeview. _________________ Outside a dog, a book is man's best friend. | Well I found this out the other day. Chinese chopsticks are rounded at the end whilst Japanese chopsticks are tapered at the end |

Thank you! Off to a flying start... Now, of course, I wonder why this came about, aesthetics or practicality, but maybe I could put that as a bonus question at the bottom of the board....
Thanks again. |

.....so you thought you'd get someone else to make them up for you.
Most people know that Van Gogh only sold one painting during his life time. It was called "The Red Vineyard" and was exhibited at the annual Les XX exhibition in 1890. The sale price was 400 francs. _________________ So much clogging!! |

Immediately go and buy the Book Of General Ignorance. Not only will you Trivia Galore, but you will aid production of future shows.
A win-win situation, if ever there was one!

| Here's a suggestion: get a copy of the QI Book of General Ignorance (just published in the USA by Harmony) for the library, and work your way through it. |

<Kangeroos can't fart. That interesting enough for the fact board?>
Not only is that interesting enough for a fact board, it's perfect for the young adults~ I might be using that one tomorrow!! They loved the fact that rats can't vomit, which is why rat poison works so well. Not cruelty free, but still pretty interesting.
And I will indeed be buying the Book of General Ignorance, now that it's available in the US, but I wanted to pick the forum's brains as well. |

horses can't vomit either, which accounts for their extremely delicate digestive system.
one you probably already knew - it was on qi, and also on house: the barnacle has the longest penis in the animal kingdom. though i'm not sure if you're allowed to pin up penis related facts in an oklahoma high school library. ;-)

The longest penis I thought was owned by the Blue Whale. The barnacle's might be the longest in relation to it's body size :)
and surely it's the girth that count's! |

yeah, nitpick away! OBVIOUSLY it's the longest in relation to its body size, given that barnacles tend to be rather on the small side, but i'm just so not into state the obvious contests. *rolls eyes* and i don't think it was the blue whale, was it? it's never the blue whale...

A crocodile cannot stick its tongue out.
It's impossible to sneeze with your eyes open. This was the defence of a client of my lawyer friend, who claimed she crashed her car due to having her eyes closed, as she had sneezed.
Apparently it's true. |
