Hans Mof	100373.  Sat Oct 07, 2006 5:11 pm The naked mole rat is a rodent native to East Africa. It is in many ways a unique animal. - Heterocephalus glaber is the only species in the genus Heterocephalus. Even though it is called mole rat it is more closely related to the (old world) porcupine. - They are almost completely hairless and have relatively large protruding teeth which they use to dig. They can move at the same speed forwards and backwards. - The naked mole rat is the only cold blooded mammal. It needs an environment with a specific constant temperature to survive. - It lives in a eusocial organisation social structure, similar to that found in ants, termites, and some bees. Within a colony only the queen and one to three males reproduce. - Naked mole rats have the highest incest rate of all animals. A colony shows 80% genetic resemblance (in comparison: human sibblings only show 50% resemblance). - It lacks the neurotransmitter Substance P, therefor, when cut or burnt they sense the heat or damage to their skin but they don‘t feel pain. - The naked mole rat is the only animal that resembles human male genitalia. _________________ ik worstel en kom boven Last edited by Hans Mof on Sun Oct 08, 2006 1:53 pm; edited 1 time in total
Ameena	100375.  Sat Oct 07, 2006 5:15 pm They also have an area dug out and all use it as a communal toilet, and there's something in the queen's urine that keeps the females from ovulating. When she dies they can become fertile again so they can have a new queen.
