Does anyone else find the theme song terribly sterile and boring? Everyone I've introduced to the show comments on how bad it is and I tend to agree. It's this awful combination of a children's show theme and a slow reggae beat, and sounds like the show is meant exclusively for the middle-aged middle class. Anything would be a good replacement - classical especially.

And classical wouldn't sound like it's exclusively for the middle-aged, middle class?

Personally I would have thought that a marriage twixt childrens show and reggae would be ideal for Jamaican kids. Or maybe people who are a bit infantile and smoke a lot of weed, I suppose.

Maybe it's because I'm coming from a specific American perspective, I'm not sure. In my experience the middle class here doesn't listen to classical, it's too challenging and unsafe. They prefer soft rock, bad white electric blues, Bob Marley, Dave Matthews, etc. Give them 15 years and it'll also be Snoop Dogg.

Ah, I see.

So we've learnt something;

The English middle class

The American middle class;

Not that I'm exaggerating, or anything.

Apart from from personal tastes, it does raise the question, has any other show apart from Qi ever had the signature tune composer come on as a guest?

Now there's a great question!

I can't immediately discover who wrote the theme tune for Never Mind The Buzzcocks, but that might be a possibility.

I think it's Richard Blair-Oliphant.

However, speaking as a British expat living in Maine, I would say that there is a distinct difference between the British definition of middle class and the American definition. In my experience, when Americans talk about the middle class they actually mean what the British would call the working class.

If the working class is called the middle class, what do Americans call lower class?

Mind you, we don't call anything lower class. Apart from the upper class.

Bill Bailey created the theme, and appeared regularly on "The Museum of Curiosity." :)

Well, i certainly don't find it QI. I have emailed QIHQ as follows:

I always find QI actually VI in all respects save one - the signature tune, and for 2 reasons:

1. It isn't a very interesting tune (sorry if that offends the composer);
2. It's the same one every week.

Now I can see the sense in having the same tune to announce your slot each week: but how about introducing some QI variety by letting your viewers and forum contributors compose and submit their own playout tunes (given the time parameters)? You could play a different one each week, which would introduce viewers to some QI different musical styles (well, nobody said you had to like a piece of music for it to be interesting).

and received the following reply from Sarah:

Sorry you don’t like the theme music for QI – I happen to love it but I know Rich Hall would agree with you!

I’m afraid that I don’t think the BBC would be up for your idea BUT we are about to start the process of re-designing our website and I shall file your email away – and see if we can’t introduce it as a feature on the website.

Thank you for taking the trouble to get in touch – new series of the Show due to start in November so hope you’ll be watching then.
